Describe this Action Project's goal in 100 words or fewer:

This project focuses on learning to assess the College’s institutional outcome “Ethical Behavior,” to include the following key aspects:

  • Reach consensus among faculty about the meaning of ethical behavior within the different professional contexts of our various degrees/majors.
  • Determine what aspects of ethical behavior can be effectively and reliably measured.
  • Decide upon a repeatable method for assessing ethical behavior.
  • Implement and evaluate the assessment process.
  • Summarize what has been learned from this project to help inform other assessment activities.

Describe briefly your institution's reasons for taking on this Action Project now -- why the project and its goals are high among your current priorities: 

Kettering College extensively revised its institutional outcomes in 2007 and has been in process of determining how to measure the outcomes.  The first action project undertaken was the assessment of critical thinking.  The process developed for this outcome is now being applied to outcome 3:  Ethical Behavior.  We will evaluate whether the process used for this outcome can be applied to additional outcomes, or if different processes are needed for each outcome.

  • Student learning

Explain the rationale for the length of time planned for this Action Project (from kickoff to target completion):     

Achieving alignment in understanding what ethical behavior means within the context of each professional discipline is challenging and takes considerable conversation among the faculty.  This outcome is especially complex because we have to determine what changes the educational process can genuinely affect in our students, as well as what is reasonable to measure.

Describe how you plan to monitor how successfully your efforts on this Action Project are progressing:     

The “key aspects” described under section B will be used to monitor whether we successfully progressing through this action project.   Monitoring is done by the ad hoc committee, as well as by the Outcomes and Accreditation Committee, which has responsibility for AQIP-related activities.

Describe the overall "outcome" measures or indicators that will tell you whether this Action Project has been a success or failure in achieving its goals:    

  • Faculty will demonstrate understanding of the process used to assess ethical behavior within each major by participating in the assessment activities.
  • A repeatable process for assessing ethical behavior will be developed.
  • Learning from this project will be used to inform the process(es) for assessing additional institutional outcomes.
  • Evaluation of ethical behavior becomes ongoing; data is collected, analyzed, and used in planning more effective instruction and assessment.
