Computer Resources for Students

updated 6/18/10

Timeline: Begin project in April 2010, conclude project in September 2011.

Lead:  Bev Ervin

Describe this Action Project's goal in 100 words or fewer:

This project focuses on developing computer resources that:

  • enhance student learning,
  • ensure access at needed times, and
  • provide accessible, secure, and efficient methods for computer testing.

Identify the single AQIP Category which the Action Project will most affect or impact:

Category Six - Supporting Organizational Operations

Describe briefly your institution's reasons for taking on this Action Project now -- why the project and its goals are high among your current priorities:

Since 2005 the College has considered a number of approaches to providing useful and cost effective computer resources for students—i.e. computer labs, dedicated computer classroom, computers in the professional skills labs and library, requiring students to purchase personal laptops, and moveable carts with computer laptops.  In 2006-07 the College purchased 90 laptop computers to conduct a pilot project that extended over three years.  This project assessed how computers enhanced learning in the classroom and helped us determine we would not require students to purchase personal laptops.

During the past year, the College conducted several surveys to students and faculty about computer usage and needs.  We acknowledge constraints in finding additional learning spaces; therefore, solutions need to be agile, flexible, and take into account the rapidly changing field of technology.  We know the College will continue to face an ongoing need to find an effective way to address the computer needs—specifically, needs for computer access for students while they are on campus and the means for accessible, secure, and efficient computer testing.

List the organizational areas - -institutional departments, programs, divisions, or units -- most affected by or involved in this Action Project:

All academic departments and curricula—Associate to Master’s degrees.

Teaching and Learning with Technology Committee

Learning Commons

Information Systems

Dean's Council

Name and describe briefly the key organizational process(es) that you expect this Action Project to change or improve:

  • Classroom computer testing
  • Computer lab accessibility

Explain the rationale for the length of time planned for this Action Project (from kickoff to target completion):

Having conducted previous pilot projects related to computers, we have found that it takes a full academic year to understand and address the complete cycle of need, since no two semesters are the same in terms of student demand. The proposed time line will give sufficient time to experiment with different approaches and determine the most effective response. It also will allow time to address potential new financial demands, should recommendations require that we acquire additional computer resources.

Describe how you plan to monitor how successfully your efforts on this Action Project are progressing:

Teaching and Learning with Technology Committee will take the lead role in shepherding this project through to conclusion. The first task is to compile key outcomes to achieve each semester until the conclusion of the project.

Describe the overall "outcome" measures or indicators that will tell you whether this Action Project has been a success or failure in achieving its goals:

  • Student surveys will reflect adequacy of campus computer resources.
  • Faculty surveys will reflect adequacy of computer testing resources.
  • Adequate funding and physical plant resources will have been acquired for identified needs.
