Selection of a Learning Management System

Timeline: Begin project in November 2011, conclude project in September 2012.

Lead:  Jim Nesbit

PROJECT GOAL

The purpose of this project is to select and implement an LMS by Aug. 15, 2012.

REASONS FOR THE PROJECT

This project is of vital importance to the College. We are currently using Angel as our Learning Management System (LMS). Angel will no longer be fully supported by its vendor, Blackboard, effective October 2012 and will no longer be supported at all by October 2014. The College must have an alternative LMS selected and implemented before full support expires. The decision of which LMS to select will have immediate and long-range effects on all faculty and students, as well as the institution's financial resources.

ORGANIZATIONAL AREAS AFFECTED

  • All academic departments -- department leadership and teaching faculty
  • Teaching and Learning with Technology Committee
  • Online Education Committee
  • College Information Systems
  • Students

KEY ORGANIZATIONAL PROCESS(ES)

  • Institutional support processes, specifically IT support and financial support
  • Teaching/learning processes for both faculty and students

PROJECT TIME FRAME RATIONALE

The timeline is driven by external changes -- vendor contracting and support.

PROJECT SUCCESS MONITORING

The action project has a timeline in place for movement toward decisions and implementation as follows: the college will have a new LMS selected and purchased by May 2012, the system will be piloted during summer term 2012, and the system will be fully operational by October 2012.

PROJECT OUTCOME MEASURES

A new LMS will be selected, purchased, in place and working effectively for faculty and students. Adequate IT support processes will be available. Measures of student and teacher satisfaction will be at a 3.25 or higher on a scale of 1-4 after one year of full implementation.
