Happy Birthday, Kettering College of Medical Arts!

Forty years ago, on Sept. 17, 1967, Kettering College of Medical Arts first opened its doors to justover 100 freshmen.

At the time, Virginia Kettering made it clear that her vision for the new medical center included education. “It will be necessary,” she said, “for the hospital to become involved in preparing young people for satisfying lives of service here and in the other institutions in various parts of the world.”

It’s a long way from 100 to 800 students in health care. It’s a long way from three associate degree programs (in nursing, respiratory care and radiologic technology) to the several more we have today, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees now fully a part of what we do here. From humble beginnings the college has become a regional leader in nursing and allied health sciences education.

The faculty, staff and students of Kettering College will gather with other Kettering Health Network personnel on Monday, Sept. 17, to celebrate 40 years of educating the finest health care professionals. We will commemorate the school’s 40th anniversary from 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m. in the Boonshoft Student Center with cake, punch and other festivities, including blowing out the birthday candles at 12:30 p.m. A giant birthday card also will be on hand for attendees to express their well wishes, as the school embarks on another 40 years of excellence.
