Extra A&P Review Session Helps Students Succeed
The Student Success Center (SSC) is a resource at Kettering College aimed at helping students succeed. Whether students are coming to the center for tutoring in a specific subject or getting coaching in life skills, the goal of the SCC is to walk alongside students in their journey to becoming a professional.
Part of assisting students is listening to what they need. Several students were expressing concern over the first Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) test of the semester, so Brittany Seeger, Student Success Coach, had the idea of creating a review session specifically aimed at assisting students with this first A&P test. Dustin Waters, Director of Student Success, took Seeger’s input and began the process to offer this new event on campus.
Heather Allyn, a respiratory therapy student, is a tutor in the SSC with experience in breaking down information easily, so students can better understand it. Waters approached her with the idea of the review session, and she agreed to help, even after she realized the session would be at 7:30 a.m.
The SSC called the session, “Coffee and Cram,” and the early morning start time did not scare students off. In fact, nearly 20 students signed up but almost double that amount were in attendance. Allyn says, “Getting up, and coming into school so early to squeeze in that last bit of study time is not a small commitment.”

She says, “I wanted to respect their time, so I prepared over the weekend to make sure that time was worth it to them. I studied the materials they were being tested on, and I approached it as though I was being retested on these unit materials.”
Feedback is coming in from students who attended Coffee and Cram, and they are reporting their scores have been excellent on the test. They tell the SSC the session has helped tremendously. As a result, two more sessions have been scheduled as a continuation this semester.
Seeger and Waters are thrilled the session was so impactful. They note that Professor Randi Quale was instrumental in making this so helpful for students. She sat with Allyn as she prepared to tutor, ensuring she could be best prepared to guide students and predict their questions.
Waters says, “This was a great success for the SSC and the students of Kettering College. Heather Allyn brought so much positive energy into the planning of the event and ultimately nailed it. This is a reflection of who we can all be at Kettering College.”
He goes on to explain, “By no means did the students put off studying and this event took their grades from an F to an A. Students are taking their studies seriously, voiced concern about an upcoming test they clearly cared deeply about, and then rose to the occasion by coming to the review session.”

Allyn echoes that sentiment: “All this session did was bring the hard work these students had already put into this class to the forefront of their minds right before taking the exam. Had they not put in the work prior to this study session, it is very likely this event would not have been very helpful.”
The staff at the SSC heard the concerns of our students and worked together to create this optional event to provide support. Waters says, “This is a win for everyone involved, and it should set the tone going forward that Kettering College cares deeply about our students and shares in their success.”
Tutor Heather Allyn notes that she also gained valuable knowledge through this experience that will help her in her career. She says, “Education is a large part of patient care, and there are likely going to be occasions where I will need to educate patients or their families on how to manage their health concerns. Tutoring and study sessions are a wonderful opportunity for me to practice this particular skill.”
