Induction into Nursing Honor Society
Sigma Theta Tau is an international honor society for nurses that was founded in 1922 by six nursing students in Indiana. Since its inception, it has grown to include over 100 countries and approximately 135,000 members. The society and its members uphold the vision of creating connected, empowered nurse leaders who are transforming global healthcare.
Its global span has even partnered with the United Nations to promote the importance of nursing and provide vital education to nurses worldwide. Membership extends lifelong learning opportunities and access to research, information, and events. Their mission of “developing nurse leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere” remains at the forefront of everything they do to support nurses.
Thanks to the dedicated work of Professor Marisa Blahovich and the support of Dr. Paula Reams, the first group of nursing students and leaders from Kettering College was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau last year. This year, the division of nursing reached another accomplishment: Kettering College is officially included in the local Zeta Phi chapter of Sigma. Professor Blahovich accepted a plaque to mark this inclusion as official.
Along with the amendment, two remarkable nursing students were also inducted into this prestigious honor society at the ceremony. Danielle Brown and Joy Jackson have demonstrated superior academic achievement, integrity and growing leadership skills. With their membership, they will collaborate with nurses with a variety of experiences and knowledge to help them as their careers flourish.
Sigma’s crest represents love, courage, and honor. These values are what the founders decided are at the root of the nursing profession and what members agree continue to hold true. The induction ceremony was a way to continue the work started over 100 years ago to ensure continued education and resources are shared to support the profession globally.
Blahovich says now that Kettering College has been accepted into the charter, she is reaching out to Kettering Health nurses to join. It is an exciting door that has opened for our nursing students, faculty and Kettering Health staff.
She says, “It is an honor to be a part of Sigma Theta Tau International, promoting scholarship and research, as well as recognizing excellence in academics for our students and nurse leaders.”
Thanks to Professor Blahovich for leading the charge to be included, and congratulations again to Danielle Brown and Joy Jackson for not only becoming members but for also becoming a part of history.
