Kettering College Humanities Professors Present at Conference

Two of Kettering College’s Humanities professors, Dr. Cory Wetterlin and Dr. Duane Covrig, recently took part in a conference created for religious scholars from around the world to share their research and take part in discussions.

Over 10,000 professionals attended the recent conference hosted by the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion in San Antonio, Texas. The Seventh-day Adventist community was represented at the conference by three different groups: The Society of Adventist Philosophers, the Adventist Theological Society, and the Adventist Society of Religious Studies.

Dr. Wetterlin and Dr. Covrig had papers that were selected as presentations. They co-presented for the Adventist Society of Religious Studies, which spoke to the conference’s theme: “The Great Controversy: Up to Date or Out of Date.” Dr. Wetterlin says their presentation reminded listeners that “We must rely on the justification that comes through faith in Christ, rather than the self-justification that so often harms those around us as others are blamed for our mistakes.”

Dr. Wetterlin had a second paper accepted by the Adventist Theological Society in which he applied Kettering College’s unique emphasis on spiritual care to that portion of the conference’s theme of “Theological Anthropology.” He demonstrated the different spiritual needs that can be produced based on the patient’s understanding of who God is and how that view affects the way humanity manifests the image of God.

A Sabbath morning presentation was held in one of the local Adventist churches in San Antonio and was followed by a panel discussion focused on helping to meet society’s mission of extending theological education beyond academic halls into local church congregations.

Dr. Wetterlin says, “It is one of my great joys in life to dig deeply into the questions that we have about God, dialogue with other scholars, and find ways to communicate what we have discovered with the multidisciplinary congregation/classroom.”
