Kettering College Offers Mental Health Support to Students

August 27, 2024—Kettering College’s students come from a variety of life experiences and situations. From the recent high-school graduate to the middle-aged parent returning to college, our students are what make our campus diverse and a reflection of God’s love.

No matter where students are in their lives, a common factor is that attending college can be a stressful time that can feel overwhelming. In fact, according to U.S. News & World Report, in a Gallup poll that surveyed more than 2,400 college students in March 2023, 66% reported experiencing stress, and 51% reported feelings of worry “during a lot of the day.”

If you are a college student experiencing stress and anxiety, you are not alone.

As students at Kettering College undertake a rigorous curriculum and adjust to new rhythms that accompany college life, our students, like all college students, commonly experience stress. This stress can stem from such things as the pressure of wanting to succeed, balancing other obligations with college, or not implementing positive habits that foster holistic health and time management.

The faculty and staff at Kettering College aim to normalize mental health care and encourage students to implement it as an ongoing habit without stigma. To help accomplish this, Kettering College has partnered with Uwill, an online mental health and wellness solution tailored specifically for colleges and students. Uwill’s mission is “To offer immediate mental health and wellness support eliminating all barriers to care.”

“We are committed to offering a multi-channel approach to ensure our students have healthy emotional well-being and resources to improve mental health.”

-Adam Brown, Dean of Student Success, Kettering College

One such barrier for busy Kettering College students is often time. Uwill’s free teletherapy is offered any time of day or night, simply by using its online platform. Booking an appointment can be done in five minutes. Talking about problems or worries out loud with a mental health professional can mean the difference between feeling alone and overwhelmed to instead feeling empowered and able to cope with anxiety and stress.

Uwill teletherapy sessions are free and easy to utilize any time of day or night.

Admitting college, and life in general, can be stressful is often the first step in supporting students in their mental health care, so they know they’re not alone in their emotions. Their peers are undoubtedly feeling it as well. Licensed social worker, Bob Hanson, is a counselor at Uwill, and he says, “That is my gratitude for what Uwill stands for—letting students know that they are not alone out there and that there is someone there to listen.”

Teletherapy provided by Uwill counselors is private, secure, and confidential. To take advantage of this free mental health and wellness resource, Kettering College students must:

  • Create a profile with Uwill.
  • Choose a therapist based on personal preferences including availability, issue, gender, language, or ethnicity.
  • Choose a time that fits your schedule with day, night, and weekend availability.

In addition to free telehealth sessions, students also have free access to on-demand wellness programming through Uwill. Select wellness from the left navigation and browse the wide range of wellness offerings, such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and more. Students can find what works best for them to make this tool their own.

Adam Brown, dean of Student Success at Kettering College, says, “We are committed to offering a multi-channel approach to ensure our students have healthy emotional well-being and resources to improve mental health. Uwill will allow our students to have teletherapy and counseling 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Uwill also has several resources to help improve physical, mental, and spiritual health. We are excited to have a partner in Uwill.”
