Kettering College Hosts Rocket Launch

The Kettering College Science & Mathematics department held its first ever model rocket launch on February 21st! This year-long plan also included connections with the National Association of Rocketry for their launch assistance. The crowd, mixed with faculty, staff, students and their families enjoyed seeing the rockets launch. Jonathan Engelman, Associate Professor of mathematics and physics recalled his favorite moments of the event, “one of the best parts were the students seeing how much noise the rockets made at liftoff.”

Jonathan facilitated this event with students enrolled in Survey of Physics (PHYS 131). He has been involved in model rockets for several years, which led to his interest in high power rockets. That’s when he got the idea to add rocketry to his physics curriculum. “Model rocketry is for all ages and all ability types. I joined the local rocket club last spring and since have learned about how much they do to help anyone learn about model rocketry.”

The Science & Mathematics department is planning to facilitate another rocket launch next school year for future physics classes. For more information, or to see how you can get involved, contact Jonathan Engelman.
