Mark Carr Appointed Chair of Kettering College Department of Humanities and Social Sciences

Kettering, Ohio (June 19) – Mark Carr, Ph.D., has been selected as chair of the Kettering College Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, announced Dean for Academic Affairs William Nelson on Wednesday. Carr replaces James Londis, Ph.D., who retired after eight years on the Kettering College faculty and two years as department chair.

Carr currently is associate scholar in the Center for Christian Bioethics and professor of religion at Loma Linda (Calif.) University, where he has been a faculty member since 1997. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Carr also has served as the program director of the Master of Arts in Bioethics (1999-2010) and as the director of the Center for Christian Bioethics at LLU (2001-10). He holds membership in several professional organizations, including the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities, the Society of Christian Ethics, the Society of Biblical Literature and the Adventist Society for Religious Studies.

“We are delighted to have someone of Mark’s experience and academic accomplishments joining our faculty,” said Nelson. “Mark has a reputation as an excellent teacher, but he also is a scholar of note in an area of particular interest to Kettering College – that of bioethics. He’ll be a great addition to our faculty.”

“I had thought for years that Loma Linda University was the only place in the Adventist higher education universe where I could enjoy teaching ethics or bioethics in health care. But as I visited the Kettering College campus, I began to realize what a high quality, energetic institution it is,” said Carr. “Aimed at enhancing an ordinary health care education with Adventist Christian virtues, values, history and ethos, Kettering College is a happening place to be in Adventist higher education! It is young, fresh and dynamic, and it is excited about growing and drawing a quality student body from both Adventist and local populous.”

Carr received his bachelor’s degree in theology from Walla Walla College in 1987; his Master of Divinity in pastoral theology from Andrews University in 1990; and his doctorate in religious ethics from the University of Virginia in 1998. While working on his doctorate at Virginia, he completed an internship in clinical bioethics at the UVa Medical Center, taught a class in classical Islam and was the editorial assistant for BIOLAW: A Legal and Ethical Reporter on Medicine, Health Care, and Bioengineering. In addition, he was the 1995-96 recipient of the Stead Fellowship, awarded by the UVa Department of Religious Studies.

Carr is scheduled to assume his duties at Kettering College in early July.
