Student Success Team Offering Helpful Sessions

The Student Success team is always looking for ways to serve students to help them reach their goals. Recognizing that students come to us with an array of learning styles, the team strives to offer additional review sessions to help students understand and master information in a way that works for them.

Student Success recently offered a Coffee and Cram review session for Anatomy and Physiology (A&P), led by tutor Heather Allyn early in the morning to review information for an upcoming test. The attendance and feedback were so great that Student Success decided to implement these review sessions on an ongoing basis.

Tutor Claudia Sukola recently led the next Coffee and Cram session in the auditorium to review A&P, and the session has proven to be extremely helpful to students. Dustin Waters, Director of Student Success, said the session was impactful and feedback from students has been positive. As a result, more A&P review sessions are currently being organized.

The first-ever Lunch and Learn review session for chemistry was led by tutor Moses Chung. Brittany Seeger, Pre-Nursing Student Success Coach, explains the department decided to expand upon its Coffee and Cram session to include this lunchtime review session for chemistry, in response to students’ requests. Student Success provided lunch from Jimmy Johns for the event.

Seeger says, “I was impressed by the level of engagement our students had during the review; they were taking notes, asking questions, and several groups stayed after to ask for individualized help from Moses. As students were exiting, a few commented on how helpful they found the review to be and thanked us. While these review sessions are by no means a substitute for continuous and strategic studying, they offer the students perhaps a new way of looking at things and an opportunity to hear the material being explained through a different perspective via the tutor.”

Waters says the chemistry Lunch and Learn initially had nine students RSVP, but 25 were in attendance. He says, “I am impressed with the ongoing turnout. I didn’t know if turnout would decline, but as long as students continue to ask for these sessions and give us positive feedback, we will continue to facilitate these events.”

He notes that the team is still in the process of knowing fully if the review sessions increased test scores overall. Waters says, “Anecdotally, I have spoken to a handful of students who attended the review sessions, and they said they felt they nailed their tests.”

Listening to students’ feedback and concerns, Student Success quickly pivots to meet the needs of Kettering College’s students on a weekly basis. These review sessions are an example of the importance the team places on helping our students succeed by offering resources to build confidence and comprehension.
