      Student Learning Outcomes

      The goal of the Department of Respiratory Care is to prepare 1) graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs), and 2) leaders for the field of respiratory care by including curricular content that includes objectives related to acquisition of skills in one or more of the following: management, education, research, advanced clinical practice (which may include an area of clinical specialization). Upon successful completion of the respiratory care program, the graduate will be a competent advanced-level respiratory therapist. All graduates will demonstrate:

      • Ability to recall, apply, and analyze information required of advanced-level respiratory therapists.
      • Manual dexterity and technical proficiency are necessary to perform as competent advanced-level respiratory therapists.
      • A caring and positive attitude is necessary for continued employment as an advanced-level respiratory therapist.
      • Ability to engage in critical thinking, reflection, and problem solving through evidence-based practice in multiple health care settings.
      • Respect and adaptability for cultural, ethnic, and individual diversity within a changing healthcare environment.
      • Ability to incorporate current knowledge, theory, and research into health professions practice.
      • Ability to empower himself or herself and others through an integration of leadership, management, and teaching/learning skills in the health care environment.
      • Professional, ethical, spiritual, and compassionate service within the health care setting.
    • Technical Standards

      Technical Standards

      Completion of the degree at Kettering College signifies the graduate is prepared for practice in his or her prospective field by meeting the technical standard requirements. Technical standards, as distinguished from academic standards, refer to the physical, cognitive, and behavioral abilities required for satisfactory completion of the curriculum. The essential required abilities include motor, sensory, communicative, intellectual, behavioral, and social aspects.

      Several standards are common to all programs. These are listed below, followed by the specific requirements of each program. The student must have the ability to:

      1. Think critically, with sound judgment, emotional stability, maturity, empathy, and physical and mental stamina.
      2. Learn and function in a wide variety of didactic and clinical settings.
      3. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, using appropriate grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
      4. Immediately comprehend and respond to auditory instructions or requests.
      5. Think clearly and act calmly in stressful situations.
      6. Perform up to a 12-hour clinical experience in a single 24-hour period.
      7. Work cooperatively, preserving relationships with other members of the health care team.
      8. Perform fine and gross motor skills with both hands.
      9. Apply adequate pressure to stop bleeding.
      10. Perform CPR.

      In addition to the above criteria, the following are specific to respiratory care students –

      Respiratory care students must have the ability to:

      1. Stand, sit, walk, push, pull, squat.
      2. Lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
      3. Reach in forward, lateral, and overhead motions.
      4. Climb stairs.
      5. Distinguish distance, colors, objects, and persons.
      6. Perform close paperwork.
      7. Demonstrate depth perception.
      8. Hear conversations, monitor equipment, perform auscultation, use telephone, and distinguish background noise.
      9. Distinguish between sharp/dull and hot/cold.
      10. Process and communicate information on the patient’s status with accuracy promptly for appropriate interaction with physicians, supervisors, and other members of the health care team.
