Wellness Tips from Kettering College Students
January 10, 2025—As we head into this new year, it’s common to look for fresh starts and better processes to implement in daily life. College can be stressful, so three Kettering College students share their tips on how they maintain health and wellness while going after their dreams.
Alexis Veal is a Physician Assistant Studies student who is familiar with the art of balancing life with pursuing a degree. She says, “To stay focused, even when things get hectic, I tend to pray. I also express how I’m feeling to the people closest in my life, so they can check in on me more frequently. I also like working out or going on walks as well.”
Lily Unger (above, center) is a Sonography student who relies on the power of a solid routine to maintain mental health and focus. She says, “After classes, I don’t study until after dinner, and I give myself until then to decompress. After dinner, if it’s nice out, we will also go for a walk. Having my husband and pug Rosie be there for me every night for emotional support is really important. Definitely lean on your people for support to get through your semester.”
She adds, “I also come to campus on test days to focus a few hours before the test, and it eases my anxiety of already being there and prepared. It is important to stay on top of your studying as you get the material or you will feel more overwhelmed, less motivated, and unprepared for when the test comes around. I also have a group of friends I bonded with when school started, and I stick to my people to share my journey with and ask questions. In the end, do what works best for you, and just take each day as it comes.”
Jeffery Couchot (above) is a Health Sciences Management and Education student who is busy working, being a husband and dad, and pursuing his degree to further his career at Kettering Health. He offers these helpful hints for other students who are looking for ways to sharpen their focus this semester to improve mental, physical, and spiritual health.
“One of the things I have learned from being in the National Society of Leadership and Success is to set SMART goals for myself. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. I also use past experiences to boost my confidence in achieving my goals.
I have also practiced mindfulness meditation, relaxation, and a daily log and reflection I learned from previous courses at Kettering College. This upcoming semester, I plan to attend as many Wellness Wednesdays as possible…I also plan to look into the wellness materials and podcasts provided by Kirsten Hoffman, a Kettering Colege OTD student.”
Jeffery adds that maintaining physical and spiritual health is important to keep his energy up. He has a home gym and a walking routine to get outside along with a balanced diet. He pairs this with having an active spiritual life that “includes daily prayer, Bible reading, and fellowship with other Christians.”
