Kettering College Nursing Department to Conduct Disaster Simulations

Kettering, Ohio (June 29) – The Kettering College of Medical Arts Department of Nursing will conduct disaster simulations for two groups of nursing students on Monday, July 6, at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. in the Anna May Vaughan Center for Nursing Education skills lab.

The premise for each simulation is that a building under construction will collapse during a tour, and the hospital’s emergency department will be full, so patients will be sent to the Kettering College skills lab for triage and treatment. The students will have to set up a command station and to triage a large group of patients, including many children, who will represent the wide range of injuries that can occur during an actual building collapse.

One group of nursing students participating will be from Kettering College’s Wellness and Health Alterations in Children course, and the other group will be Kettering Health Network’s “Nexterns.” The College, in collaboration with Kettering/Sycamore and Grandview/Southview Medical Centers, invites students from kc and other nursing programs to participate each summer in an eight-week nursing externship. The Network has named it the “Nextern” program because the student externs represent the next generation of nurses.

“All nurses have the potential to feel the impact of a disaster at sometime in their career,” said Amy Jauch, RN, coordinator of the Nextern program. “Disaster planning and care has been integrated into nursing curriculum to assist future nurses in understanding the professional nurse’s role in a disaster. The decision to have the students experience a disaster through disaster simulation, or a disaster drill, was a natural progression to increase the simulation that Kettering College provides its nursing students.”

Nexterns are selected based on grade-point average, clinical instructor evaluations, and interviews. This summer, the program features students from Kettering College, Wright State University, Miami University, Cedarville University, Ohio State University, University of Toledo and Indiana Wesleyan University.
