Kettering College of Medical Arts to Conduct Commencement

Kettering, Ohio (April 21) — On Saturday, April 29, Kettering College of Medical Arts will confer degrees and certificates on 216 students at the school's 38th annual commencement ceremonies. The event will be held at the Dayton Convention Center, starting at 8 p.m., and is open to the public. Sociologist Samuel Betances, Ph.D., an internationally known lecturer on diversity issues, will be the keynote speaker.

“The health care workforce needs our graduates, and we are proud of them,” said Dr. Charles Scriven, president of Kettering College. ” It's wonderful to be putting such high-quality citizens into the life of our region.”

The college president will grant 156 Associate of Science (A.S.) degrees in the following areas: nursing (82), radiologic technology (25), medical sonography (18), respiratory care (18), nuclear medicine (9), general studies (2) and pre-professional studies (2). Thirty-nine Bachelor of Science in Health Professions degrees will be awarded in the following specialties: physician assistant (23), medical sonography (5), health care professional studies (5) and advanced imaging (2). Four Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees will be awarded as well.

The following Certificates of Completion will be granted: physician assistant (13), magnetic resonance imaging (7) and computerized tomography (1). Those receiving physician assistant certificates already hold bachelor's degrees from Kettering College or from other institutions of higher learning.

Six of the graduating students will receive special recognition as members of the Vaughan-Beaven Service Learning Honors Program. These honors graduates are Adrian Crawford (radiologic technology), Rebekah Fair (nursing), Julie Gedart (nursing), Theresa Howland (nursing), Dan Thorward (health care professional studies) and Elizabeth Parks (respiratory care).

Guest speaker Dr. Samuel Betances, who spent decades in university teaching, has taught and written on the U.S. Latino experience, on church and society, on education reform and on race and gender issues. He speaks to clients from Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, universities and churches. His passion and humor have brought new energy vision to audiences in fifty states, all six U. S. territories and countries including Japan, Korea, Germany and Mexico.
