Students Expand Knowledge at Conference

A group of radiologic technology (rad tech) students and faculty recently attended the annual Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists (OSRT) conference. Nearly 20 colleges and 500 students and faculty attended the 3-day event. The OSRT conference offered numerous lectures on various topics, a mock registry test, and a Quiz Bowl competition between program students.

Dr. Tuta Ionescu, Radiologic Sciences & Imaging Chair, says 17 senior and seven first-year Kettering College rad tech students participated in this year’s OSRT conference. She says, “This annual meeting is truly focused on students and the primary desire is to introduce them to professional organizations. Many of the lectures were student-centered. One lecture, in particular was a pre-registry overview, while others explored interventional imaging, interprofessional education, professionalism in the clinical setting, or new trends in higher education.”

The OSRT conference also offered students the opportunity to take the Ballinger Examination, a mock registry test to help prepare them for the upcoming national registry exam. Another event that made learning fun was the Quiz Bowl, in which Kettering College participated for the first time this year.

Dr. Ionescu says the feedback from students who attended has been great. She says, “They were able to spend time with each other outside of the confines of the classroom. It was good to see them socialize, eat together, spend time at the pool, or enjoy the OSRT 80’s party. Prior to the conference, we spent quite a few days reviewing for the mock registry and the registry exam itself. The Quiz Bowl team spent extra time preparing, an activity they found very enjoyable and fun!”

The event was also valuable for faculty who were able to expand their knowledge through attending lectures. The conference helped them build up their students in an environment where collaboration and learning with others is essential. The educators also had an opportunity to attend a business luncheon to discuss changes in the profession and any upcoming issues.

Thanks to everyone in the Radiologic Sciences & Imaging department who work hard every day to remind students learning happens everywhere, and it can be a lot of fun when you enjoy what you do.
