Josepha Uwimana: An American Success Story
Josepha Uwimana moved from Rwanda to America in 2018 with her husband and four children. Her native languages are Kinyarwanda and French. She applied for the visa lottery in Africa for 14 years before her family won, allowing them to move to America. Each year she applied, she looked at her computer screen with disappointment when she found out her family was not accepted, yet she did not give up.
She said the day she found out she won, she was so excited she started dancing around the house and calling everyone she knew. Earlier that day, she had prayed for God to show her how she could best care for her children. She feels coming to America has been an answer to that prayer, as her entire family is now thriving.
She and her family lived in Texas for a year before moving to Ohio. She started to think about her longtime dream of becoming a nurse and became a nursing assistant and loved her job. She continues to be a nursing assistant at Kettering Health and is excited to one day become a nurse.
Josepha is a pre-nursing student at Kettering College alongside her daughter who is a sonography student here as well. Her other children are also enrolled in college and her son lives and works in France. When Josepha thought about returning to college and had doubts about it, her grown children and husband reminded her that she can do it and reach her dream. They tell her she has devoted her life to them, and now it’s her turn.
