Virtual Compassion Care Conference Focuses on Self-Care of Healthcare Workers
On Friday, September 16, Kettering College is joining forces with other healthcare organizations online to present the Virtual Compassion Care Conference. The theme of the conference will be focused on the necessity of self-care for healthcare providers to better care for others.
Dr. Earnest Grant, President, American Nurses Association, is one of the keynote speakers. His presentation is titled, “The Well-Being Initiative, Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation, Practice & Advocacy.”
Dr. Carlton Byrd, President, Southwest Region Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, will be presenting his keynote speech, “Protecting Your Purpose.”
The day’s agenda is filled with presentations that are meant to show nurses of all ages and points in their careers the power of caring for themselves and each other as a team.
Other presentations, among others, include:
- “Generational Age Difference in Nursing: Can We All Get Along?”
- “Self-Caring in the Workplace & Embracing the Pause”
- “Don’t Lose the Art in All That Science!”
Kettering College’s Dean of Nursing, Dr. Paula Reams, asked nursing faculty to identify their passions, so she could help them bring these to life. Assistant Professor of Nursing, Dr. Cynthia Hammond, expressed a desire to create a nursing conference with a focus on caring for nurses. She approached Dr. Reams with the idea and this soon turned into an impressive collaboration to support healthcare providers nationwide.
Dr. Hammond says, “I see this conference as beginning a conversation with nurses and healthcare providers. I was always taught that nursing begins with taking care of the patient. I believe a new paradigm should be our focus and nurses should consider starting care with the nurse. If nurses would better care for themselves, then their nurse peers, they could be a better professional nursing force to care for the patient.”
Self-care is more than a bubble bath with candles. It is the pausing and taking care of yourself in the moment, then expanding the moment. It is making sure the nurse’s needs are meet for the moment and then activate care of others.

Dr. Hammond says, “My goal is to provide options to nurses and healthcare workers, seeking better outcomes for these frontline heroes!”
