CARES Act COVID-19 Emergency Funding
Kettering College is working to provide emergency funding for students who have been economically impacted by COVID-19. As a result of the CARES ACT, institutions of higher education can request funding to be disbursed to students who have needs based on the results of COVID-19. If you are struggling financially because of this pandemic, this is a way to help.
The CARES ACT Application is closed as the deadline has passed.
Here are a couple of things to take into account:
- This is a grant and you will not have to pay it back
- Any student can apply for emergency funding (undergraduate, graduate, international and domestic students)
- The request is only for Winter 2020 semester. Thus, when filling out the application, estimate costs for WINTER 2020
- This funding will not impact your federal or state aid
- Priority in funding will be given to those with the highest financial need
- If you receive funds, you will be mailed a check to your current address. Please provide accurate information on the CURRENT ADDRESS question on the application.
- International students cannot receive funds from the CARES Act
- Online students who were registered and participating in online classes BEFORE MARCH 13, 2020, cannot receive funds from the CARES ACT (so RN-to-BSN degree track and Bachelor Completion in Health Sciences students)
- Undocumented immigrant students (such as DACA) cannot receive funds from the CARES ACT
A few of these points weren’t included in the original rules, but have now been updated by the federal administration. Kettering College will be required, as an institution, to check all of these criteria before we can disburse funds through this program. However, Kettering College, through its wonderful donors and foundation, will work with students who are not eligible for CARES Act funding through the student assistance fund. You can still fill out the application because we will want to find out your need.

CARES ACT Reporting
Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Reporting- Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students
The following information is listed in order to comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) official reporting requirements related to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds (HEERF I, II, & III).
*The following information reflects the quarterly report as posted on July 9, 2021.
Certification and Acknowledgement:
Kettering College signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
Total Amount of Funds Received:
Kettering College will receive or has received $262,647 from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement [for] Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
Total Amount of Funds Distributed:
As of 8/16/20: Kettering College has distributed $262,647 or 100% of funds awarded to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).
Kettering College has distributed $91,314 to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).
Number of Eligible Students:
Kettering College has estimated that 550 students are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Number of Students Receiving HEERF Funds:
As of 8/16/20: Kettering College reported 304 students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
As of 7/2/20: Kettering College reported 284 students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Kettering College reported 123 students who have received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Institutional Distribution Methodology:
The awarding of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Funds has a priority to those with the most need. The need determination is based on FAFSA estimated family contribution, size of household, and the financial challenges our students are struggling with to make ends meet after their lives have been disrupted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The awarding rubric for these grants has a total of 23 points up to 10 of those are earned from the FAFSA estimated family contributions ranging from $0.00 to $15,000. The other 13 points are earned from the applicant’s self-attestation of need through the grant application. These grants will only be distributed to students that are or could be eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA). The criteria to participate in programs under Section 484 of the HEA include but are not limited to the following: U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen; a valid Social Security number; registration with Selective Service (if the student is male); and a high school diploma, GED, or completion of high school in an approved homeschool setting. The overall philosophy the college took was one of providing the students that told us that they had needs due to the coronavirus with an impactful amount of these funds. We will award these funds in rounds until funding is exhausted. The first two rounds will require the student to fill out the application. If funds are still available, we will enter a third round that will exhaust funding. These are the method(s) used by Kettering College to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
Instructions Provided to Eligible Students:
- The following are the instructions, directions, or guidance provided by Kettering College to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants: Students were instructed through email to fill out an application to request funding. The application was sent in the email and put on the Coronavirus webpage of the Kettering College website. The coronavirus webpage is also where students could go to find the criteria for being eligible for funding, the FAQ sheet for CARES Act that was provided by the Department of Education, and important dates and deadlines. Students were emailed weekly as well as reminded by advisors and faculty. Finally, information was posted on CANVAS, Kettering College’s learning management system.
