“Kettering Path” Program Serves as Pipeline to Kettering College

Getting the word out about Kettering College’s programs and faith-based culture is something John Nunes, PhD, is passionate about. He is the director of online learning in the division of professional and continuing education, but in addition to that role, he is an instrumental person in communicating our programs to area Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) high schools.

Nunes is a vital point-of-contact for Kettering Path, a pipeline program that informs area SDA high schools about Kettering College. Kettering Path was created two years ago with Darren Wilkins, the principal at Spring Valley Academy, and has partnered with six schools total in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Indiana.

“My job is to tell the Kettering story and to personally let them know we can serve them right here.”

-John Nunes, PhD

The aim of Kettering Path is to build relationships with faculty and students and create an ongoing pipeline for students who are interested in pursuing careers in healthcare on an Adventist campus. Nunes says, “My goal is to create a positive awareness of Kettering College, so students consider us a viable option for healthcare higher education.” He points out that the long-term goal is creating a reputation and earning the trust of area SDA schools. He adds that even if students decide not to attend here, the aim is to inform them of the option, so they share the information with peers and consider us in the future if their plans change.

Nunes travels to the six schools in the program and continues to check in with faculty, students, and parents. He says, “My job is to tell the Kettering story and to personally let them know we can serve them right here.” Over the last two years of the program’s inception, he has been building relationships with the SDA academies, and says, “It’s about building camaraderie beyond just the numbers. I need to have enough credibility that I can walk into a classroom and have teachers trust me and know they can tell me all about their students.”

Kettering Path has helped present Kettering College as a strong option for students, and both years of the program, we have seen more students enroll from participating academies. High school students, teachers, and parents are becoming aware of our specialties and hearing firsthand from John Nunes of our faith-based curriculum and service-learning culture. He is doing the work to let potential students and their families know we are here and ready to serve them.
